The Stensrud Log

The First writing of The Stensrud Log by Stanley Earl in 1961

Grandfather Stensrud was born in Christiania, Norway (now called Oslo). He married Carrie Olsen, also born in Oslo, Norway.

Our father, Charles Oscar Emil Stensrud, was born in Norway August 1, 1866, and his oldest brother, Herman, was also born in Norway. They came to the United States when Charlie Stensrud was nearly 4 years old, in 1870, After moving to the U.S., the Stensrud’s had three children, two boys and 1 girl. They first lived in Chicago, Illinois then moved to Michagamme, Michigan, where Grandfather Stensrud operated a hardware store, tin shop and undertaking parlor. They remained there until the death of both Grandfather and Grandmother. When the younger son, Edwin took over, he dropped the tin shop and later dropped the hardware store, but he carried on the funeral parlor until his death in 1943. At that time his daughter married and to this (1961) they are running the old Stensrud business.

In the Stensrud family, the oldest Charles Oscar Emil. There were a brother, Herman, who had a large plumbing shop in Marquette, Michigan; a brother, Gilbert, who had a hardware store in the East Superior, Wisconsin, later moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota and was for many years a traveling salesman for Delphas Can Company, the American Can Company and the Watkins Saw Company. Gilbert married Lena ? but they had no children. After his death he was burried in Michigamme, Michigan, in the family plot where all but Dora, the sister & Charles are buried. Dora is buried in El Centro, California & Charles in Forest Lawn Cemetery (Now in El Centro) Glendale California. *

Our mother, Agnes Jemima King, was born to Louis King and his wife, nee Kate Miller. She was born in Trenton, Pennsylvania, and Grandfather King was born in France. Agnes was born in Flint, Michigan in 1868, Sept, 20. She married Charles O.E. Stensrud on 26 January 1888 in Michigamme, Michigan. Here the first child, Emma Louise, was born in 1889 on 9 February. Other children were Charles Louis on 6 April 1890; a daughter Ruie Pearl on 4 May 1891; a daughter, Birdie May on 28 June 1892; Then a son after that they moved to Superior, Wisconsin, where a son, Stanley Earl was born on 17 January 1895; a daughter, Myrtle Ruth on 14 Sept, 1899; then a daughter Audrey Gertie Eva, was born 18 January 1901 and another daughter in 1902 named Bessie. the last born was Governor Aubrey Stensrud on 29 July 1907.

Our family is scattered over a large part of the country, Two sons and 2 daughters are buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in South Superior in March 1900 and is now one of the nicest in the state of Wisconsin

Our mother and oldest sister and father Stensrud’s sister are in the Evergreen Cemetery in El Centro, California, where C.O. Stensrud owned and operated the cemetery from March 1920 until his death in 1937, where his second wife, Emma, forced its sale to the county of Imperial. Charles O. Stensrud is in crypt 125 of Forest Lawn memorial in Glendale, California where he had bought a crypt for both himself and our mother. He later bought the El Centro Cemetery and he buried our mother there when she passed on 30 April 1922. At the death of Charles Oscar his second wie had charge of El Centro so his request was to be put in Glendale.

Our mother, Agnes Jemima King, was born in Flint, Michigan on 2 September 1868 and was the oldest of nine children. Next after our mother was Mamie, Then brothers Fred & George, sister Kate, brothers Willie & Joe, sisters Ruie & Gertie. The dates of death of the king family are not known to the writer, but can be obtained from Eva Leininger of Ann Arbor, Michigan, I Think ***

At present (1961) the Stensrud’s are Ruie Pearl Mckern at 4227 Iowa St., San Diego, California , Stanley Earl at 3367 31st St., San Diego, California, Myrtle Ruth Causey at 4080 45th St., San Diego, California; and Governor Aubrey Stensrud at 2207 West Fillmore St., Phoenix, Arizona.

Emma Louise Stensrud, the oldest of the Stensrud’s, born 9 February 1889, was married to William Conrad in Ishpeming, Michigan in 1910. A daughter, June Agnes was born to them 7 August 1916. She was married to Rodney Miller, and a son was born to them and named Rodney Jr. He is new married and living in Littleton, Colorado. The Conrad’s also had a son, John born about 1924, who is married, has two sons, and lives in Dallas, Texas. He is Chief Test pilot for Chance-Vaught Aviation Company. Emma Louise died in 1934 of a heart ailment.

Ruie Pearl first married George Apple, a son, Governor Aubrey, was born 13 June1916. She divorced Apple and later married Leonard Cartwright, a son Leonard Jr. was born to them and is now married and living in San Diego, California. Pearl’s husband, Leonard passed on with a heart attack and she later married Clyde Mckern, who seems like a real nice man but they could not agree to so he moved back with his daughter in northern California.

Birdie May Stensrud married George Stewart Gillespie on 10 November 1910 in Superior, Wisconsin. Their first child, a daughter, born 1 December 1914, died shortly after birth. Their second child, a daughter named Ruth Elizabeth, was born 1 March 1915. Another daughter , Lois Jean, was born 29 July 1918. Ruth married Dr. Joseph B McCloskey in Denver, Colorado on 27 December 1941 and they have three sons and four daughters and live in Denver. Lois married Dr. Benjamin Bofenkamp on 28 September 1940, and they adopted a son and daughter, Lois died on 18 December 1953 of Hodgkins disease and is buried in Resurrection Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. George Gillespie died of cancer in March 1950 and is buried at Two Harbors, Minnesota.

Stanley Earl Stensrud was married to Eliza Lee Clinckscales on 12 March 1914. They had five children: Birdie Clair, born 26 March 1915; Richard Earl (Bud), born 13 June 1917; Fannie Lee, born 2 March 1920; Agnes Louise, born 9 June 1922 and Charles William, born 13 October 1929.

Birdie married Joe Ferrari in 1932 and they had a daughter, Julia, born 1935 and a son, Michael, born in 1947. Julia married James Watkinson about 1955 and has two sons and a daughter.

Richard Earl married Antoinette “Ann” Gattone in 1935 and had one son Richard, born 28 March 1937. They were divorced in 1942 and he married Elma Robinette in 1944. They had two children, Craig, born in 1948 and Marlene, born in 1950. Craig married Cathy Quinn in 1969, had two children, Corey Lane, born 4-8-1970, Erica Ann, born10-15-1971. Marlene married Gene Garton born 11-9-1945

Fannie Lee has not married at this writing.

Agnes Louise married Jim Slack in 1939. They had three children, Mary Louise, born in 1942; Thomas James, born in 1940; and Yvonne, born in ________________. Mary Louise was killed at age of 16 om an automobile accident. Louise and Jim live in Maricopa, Arizona.

Charles Williams died at the age of seven months of accidental poisoning.

Myrtle Ruth Stensrud married Ernest Causey, on 27 March 1918. They had three boys: Charles Henry, born 17 September 1920; Ernest N, born August 6, 1922; and Henry Jack, born 22 October 1932. Charles married Marian Davies 1945 and they have three children; Carl, born in 1947; Katherine, born in 1948; Christine, born in 1953. Carl was killed in a bicycle-bus accident in 1961. Ernest married Sue Little in 1946 and they had four children; Thomas, born in 1947; Linda, born in 1949; Robert, born in 1956 and Charles Wayne, born in 1963. Henry Jack was killed in a automobile accident at the age of 19. Earnest Causey Sr. died in 1939 of a heart attack.

Governor Aubrey Stensrud married to Mary Blake in 1929. Their first child, David, was born in 1930, but died soon after birth. A daughter, Mary Louise, was born in 1932. Governor and Mary were divorced and he later married Dorothy _______________. they have no children of that union.

Note; The Original of this log was written by Earl Stensrud in 1961. This Copy was made in December 1974 by Ruth Gillespie McCloskey, with the help of Ruth Causey to Fill in information erroneous or lacking at this time. Following are some footnotes of Earl’s log.

* In 1965 by agreement of the surviving children of Charles Oscar Stensrud, his body was removed to the cemetery in El Centro, California, where his first wife, Agnes is buried.

*** Eva Leininger was one of two daughters of Kate King and George Feigel. She married Earl Leininger and they had one daughter, Evelyn, known better as “Mike”. Eva is deceased. The other daughter was Gertie, but we have no information about her.

** You will notice a peculiarity in the dates of the birth’s of Myrtle Ruth and Audrey Gertie, M. Ruth believes that Audrey was born in 1901, rather then 1900.
